How to Recover a badly flashed Radeon in 10 easy steps!
Well the purpose of this tutorial is to help recover a Radeon once it
has been flashed with the wrong bios.It happend to me and well i wasnt
to pleased i thought damn there goes my new radeon investment:
(But dont worry if it happens to you just follow these 10 easy steps and your
radeon should be on the way to a speedy recovery!
Make sure you have the following:
-Your bad flashed radeon
-Spare pc with an internet connection for the below if you dont have a bios
-Backup bios of the original bios of your card
if you dont have one of these go to www.ocfaq.com and download
the bios for your brand of card, type of memory etc
-copy of atiflash
-Now heres the tricky part.On my GA-7N400l mobo the machine would
not post with the radeon in.I used my old A7N266-VM board and it posted
but there is no display, but the important thing is that the machine carried
on working even though there was no display. So find a machine like this as
this is what you are gonna use to recover it.
-MS-DOS boot disc (Basic boot disc we do not need cd-rom support so just make
one either using "sys c: a:" or by making one in explorer in winxp!)
-A Hard drive with a FAT32 based file system cause well an NTFS file
system dont work under dos:)
*****Step 1*****
Make sure you have all the above items!
Start the alternate machine (the one that will post with the radeon in)
but dont put the radeon in yet.we are gonna need to see what we are doing for the moment!
*****Step 2*****
Copy the bios image and atiflash utility to the main directory of the FAT32 Based Hard Drive
*****Step 3*****
-Pop your boot disk in,and obviously set the boot sequence to your stiffy drive first.
*****Step 4*****
-Let me machine boot using your boot disk you should now be at the dos prompt
*****Step 5****
-Go to the location where atiflash is stored and type the follwing
atiflash /? at the dos prompt.
*****Step 6****
-have a look at the varoius command line switches and from memory heres what
i used to recover mine(lets say my backup bios was a file called bios.bin)
atiflash 0 -f bios.bin
-f is to force a flash
-0 is for the radeon adapter number if you just have one it will be 0:)
****Step 7*****
-right hope you have written down what you need to type in cause you gonna be
going in blind..you will see what i mean later on:)
-Turn off the machine
-Pop your badly flashed radeon in!
****Step 8*****
-Turn the machine on,make sure the boot disk is in,and if all goes well
that machine should boot from the bootdisc even though there is no display.
Wait till the stiffy drive light goes off cause then it should have finished
booting from the stiffy:)
****Step 9*****
-Now come the fun part...from memory when a machine boots from a stiffy it sets
the a: as the default drive,so type c:(or d: etc depending on what drive letter
your FAT32 drive is).Hopefully you copied the atiflash util and bios image to the
root directory of this drive.if not change to the directory where it is situated!
****Step 10****
-Now type in what you wrote down earlier(commandline switches for the atiflash util)
eg atiflash 0 -f bios.bin (bios.bin being the name of your bios file:)
-if all went well restart ur machine and hey ur cards back 2 life!
FAQ!
-Ive tried what you said but my card is still dead!
**check you command line options,i know i didnt have any success with the [r] switch!
**try the flashrom.exe util(also available at www.ocfaq.com) the command line switch
are the same, atiflash worked for me maybe give it a try!
-My [r] switch worked but my screen is still blank
**Make sure you bios is the 100% correct one to use!
